Avtron M6C vs M6: Key Differences and Model Evolution

The Avtron M6C series is a well-established heavy-duty encoder family widely used in oil and gas drilling applications, particularly as a winch or drawworks encoder. Over the years, several M6 and M6C model codes have appeared, and the differences between them are not always immediately clear during maintenance, procurement, or replacement selection.

This article explains how the M6 evolved into the M6C, what changed between the main model codes, and how the different versions relate to one another in practical replacement applications.

Evolution from M6 to M6C

The M6C was developed from the earlier M6 series and can be regarded as its updated generation. Compared with the original M6, the M6C introduced a more standardized set of mechanical and electrical configurations.

1. The Legacy M6 Series

The original M6 series was available in a wider range of bore sizes and supply-voltage options:

  • Bore Sizes: 1", 1-1/8", 2", and 2-1/4"
  • Supply Voltages: 5–24 VDC, 5–18 VDC, and 12–24 VDC

2. The M6C Series

With the M6C series, the available configurations became more concentrated:

  • Bore Sizes: 1" and 1-1/8"
  • Supply Voltage: 5–24 VDC

This means that the M6C retained fewer bore-size and voltage options than the earlier M6 series.

Understanding Model Code Transitions

A later M6C version introduced another change, but this time the main product parameters did not change. The difference was in the model designation.

Specifically, the supply-voltage code changed from “1” to “8”, while the other main parameters remained the same.

The transition can be illustrated by the following model sequence:

M6-4S1HX51ZTZ00⟶M6C-4S1HX51ZTZ00⟶M6C-4S8HX51ZTZ00\text{M6-4S1HX51ZTZ00} \longrightarrow \text{M6C-4S1HX51ZTZ00} \longrightarrow \text{M6C-4S8HX51ZTZ00}

These three model codes represent the same main configuration used at different stages of the product’s evolution.

Understanding this relationship makes it easier to identify compatible models when maintaining or replacing older units.

Custom Heavy-Duty Replacement Solutions

In practice, the M6C drawworks encoder can still be difficult to source in some markets, particularly where availability is affected by regional supply conditions.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, some oil-industry projects in China were delayed because M6C encoders were difficult to obtain. An oil company therefore commissioned SIVIDI to develop a 1:1 custom replacement based on the application parameters of the M6C.

Manufactured in China, this custom replacement series uses the M6 designation and is intended for direct replacement when the required mechanical and electrical specifications match.

A similar model-code evolution also applies to the 5-series variants:

M6-5S1HX51ZTZ00⟶M6C-5S1HX51ZTZ00⟶M6C-5S8HX51ZTZ00⟶M6-02XX6F-1024\text{M6-5S1HX51ZTZ00} \longrightarrow \text{M6C-5S1HX51ZTZ00} \longrightarrow \text{M6C-5S8HX51ZTZ00} \longrightarrow \text{M6-02XX6F-1024}

Procurement Considerations

At present, the models most relevant to new procurement are the newer-generation M6C and the Chinese M6 custom replacement.

In some regions, the Chinese M6 may be the more practical option. Russia is one example.

Across markets such as the Middle East, Russia, Central Asia, and China, sourcing the newer M6C can still be relatively difficult. I do not have enough information to make the same judgment for every other region.

Based on current availability, the Chinese M6 generally offers a shorter lead time.

When selecting a replacement, the model number alone should not be the only reference. Bore size, supply voltage, output configuration, mounting dimensions, and other application parameters should still be checked carefully before an order is placed.

In the end, the most suitable choice depends on both the technical requirements of the application and the procurement conditions in the region where the encoder will be used.
